Beaubears Island, situated in the Miramichi River, is
located just outside the boundaries of the City of Miramichi, between the former Town of Newcastle and the Village of Nelson-Miramichi.
In 2002 Beaubears Island was recognized for two designations of historical significance by the Historic Sites and Monuments
Board of Canada. To get the best experience possible at Beaubears Island, we recommend that you first visit the
Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre, located at 35 St Patricks Drive, Nelson. At the Interpretive Centre, you will be welcomed
by our staff and will get a thorough introduction to the Island's history. From there you will have the choice of different
guided tours to Beaubears Island and Wilson's Point, complete with boat ride. For more information on our
tours, click on the Plan a Visit page.
Boishébert National Historic Site of Canada, one of its dual designations, tells the story of Charles Deschamps
de Boishébert who led the Acadians to Beaubears Island and Wilson’s Point where they took refuge in 1755. Beaubears Island Shipbuilding National Historic Site of Canada, J.Leonard
O’Brien Memorial, is the only known extensive, undisturbed archaeological site, associated
with the 19th century wooden shipbuilding industry, still in existence today, in New Brunswick, and perhaps Canada. The
map above shows the location of these 2 sites. (click map to enlarge)
