Tours
The Friends of Beaubears Island are pleased to announce a season packed with brand new tours in
2011! Regular tours will take place Tuesday through Saturday at 2 PM, departing from the Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre.
The tours will visit Beaubears Island and Wilson's Point by boat each day, although each day will feature a different
tour. Tours
are approximately 2 hours in length.

The Story of the First Contact & Camp d'Espérance Tuesday
- 2 PM
Take a journey back to a time when Mi’Kmaq First Nations knew the island as Quoomeneegook, and were joined
in 1669 by enterprising French traders under Richard Denys. Watch as the epic first contact between these two peoples unfolds
before your eyes and bear witness to the results of their cooperation.
Continue the experience with the Acadians, who felt unable to trust either the French or
British, and wished to remain neutral in their colonial wars. Witness the struggles of Marquis
Charles des Champs de Boishébert as he brings thousands of fleeing Acadiens to Beaubears Island and the surrounding lands
and watches them suffer starvation and disease while awaiting rescue.
Early Scottish Shipbuilding on Beaubears Island Wednesday - 2 PM
Visit with Scottish pioneer William Davidson as he attempts to establish a fishery and ship
mast business on the Miramichi River.
Hear the story of his early shipbuilding endeavours and the perils he faced during the American Revolution.
As your encounter goes on, meet James
Fraser, entrepreneur and founder of the largest business establishment in New
Brunswick, on the Island. Watch his family establish a shipbuilding dynasty
and face the dual threat of peace in Europe and
disaster at home.
Shipbuilding and more under Joseph Russell Thursday - 2 PM
Innovative and blessed with a keen
business sense, Joseph Russell became a prolific ship builder who utilized the Island’s
natural advantages to build as many as five large ships at once. A deeply religious man, watch as he must choose between a
legacy of commercial success and economic stewardship and a future filled with self-sacrifice in the cause of moral justice
and salvation.
Harley and Burchill and the End of Shipbuilding Friday - 2 PM
With their mixture shipbuilding
finesse and business savvy, John Harley and George Burchill produced the best quality ships in the Island’s
history, but there’s was a race against time. Observe how these
intrepid Irishmen fought the coming of new technology as well as the reluctance of their business partners in Great
Britain. See for yourself the last glory days of the Beaubears Island shipyard.

Shipbuilding Saturday - 2 PM
Visit an Island full
of characters, from Father of Confederation Peter Mitchell to Lieutenant Governor J. Leonard O'Brien as generations grapple
with an Island no longer busy
or inhabited. Is the Island a retreat and a sanctuary or rather a sacred space, to respected? Come
on this final passage through history and decide for yourself.
